Origin of Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a flat instrument shaped like a heart or a wedgeusually made of jade, amethyst, or rose quartz (it’s also not uncommon to find it in stainless steel).

Its special shape allows on the one hand a firm grip of the hands and on the other hand the possibility of exerting pressure on the skin and muscles (face, neck, legs, arms or buttocks) with repeated movements.

The term “Gua Sha” comes from the combination of the Chinese words “Gua” (rub) and “Sha” (heat).. This tool was born in the tradition of Chinese medicine thousands of years ago: in the beginning, metal spoons or coins were used to perform this massage, and only after several centuries was this specific object invented.

Benefits of this stone

The potential of Gua Sha is huge and its benefits for our well-being are numerous – from the treatment of nervous tension to muscle pain, from anti-inflammatory to regenerative effects on the skin and tissues.

Reduces inflammation

The repeated passage of this stone on the skin, carried out with adequate pressure, supports lymphatic microcirculation and reduces possible swellings on the face and neck – even chronic ones.

Gua Sha for feet Apply a small amount of oil to the area to be treated. This helps the gua sha glide smoothly over the skin and reduces any discomfort. Start at the feet and slowly work your way up. Apply gentle pressure with the gua sha tool to the skin using long, sweeping strokes. Apply enough pressure to create a slight redness on the skin without causing pain or discomfort. It is important to listen to your body and adjust the pressure according to your sensitivity and comfort level. Work your way up your legs, treating your calves, thighs and other areas that need attention. Spend a few minutes on each section. #guasha #bodyguasha #muscle recovery #wellness #holisticbeauty #bodycare #bodyoil

Relieves headaches

There is no scientific evidence to support this thesis, but traditional medicine defines it Gua Sha is an effective remedy for chronic headaches.

The effectiveness of this stone depends on the repeated pressure exerted on the temples and the most painful points of the head.

Relieves muscle pain

Pressure and friction applied by Gua Sha to tense muscles would contribute to karelieve painful sensations, such as a hot compress or a stretching session – and this is confirmed by numerous scientific experiments.

Especially those who have a sedentary job and spend many hours with their neck bent in front of a computer screen could greatly benefit from neck pain symptoms.

Helps muscle regeneration

Like other massage techniques, the pressure applied with Gua Sha can also help relieve pain from muscle injuries and promote recovery, thereby preventing the risk of injury and post-exertion cramps.

The pressure exerted by Gua Sha can also help relieve tension in the soles of the feet that we may experience after walking very long or standing for many hours.

It relaxes the blood supply to the breast

For lactating women, gentle use of a Gua Sha stone on the surface of the breast can help express milk and relieves discomfort caused by breast congestionlike other self-massage techniques or a hot compress.

Improves the appearance of the skin

Last but not least, it is about improving the health and appearance of our skin: consistent practice of Gua Sha massage even for just a few weeks can bring unexpected benefits.

Using the Gua Sha stone As a result, facial features are more defined and toned, and the skin is smoother and more compactit removes impurities and visibly reduces wrinkles – that’s why Gua Sha is often defined as “natural botox”.

Obviously, these benefits are not permanent: constant and long-term use of the Gua Sha stone is necessary to maintain the improvement of our face.

How to use Gua Sha

The use of this stone consists of cadenced and repetitive movements, taking advantage of the thin and wedge-shaped part that allows you to apply the right pressure to the skin and get the desired benefits.

Before picking up the stone, let’s start by deep cleaning the skin with a neutral soap. We then apply a few drops of body oil to slightly moistened skin: this will help remove friction and the stone will slide more easily.

Now we can start our own treatment: we take the stone, put the concave side on the skin and pull towards the inside of the body (to be clear, towards the heart), applying noticeable but not painful pressure.

As regards using Gua Sha on the facewe proceed as follows:

  • after cleansing the skin of the face and neck, apply a few drops of oil
  • from the base of the neck we move the concave edge of the stone up to the chin – first to the right and then to the left; we repeat at least twice on both sides
  • starting at the tip of the chin, slide the stone along the jawline and toward the ear—at least twice on each side
  • under the eye, at the inner corner, press lightly (this is a delicate place) and move the stone towards the outside of the face – twice on both sides
  • we start from the inner arch of the eyebrows, using the upper part of the Gua Sha, we slide towards the outer edge – twice on both sides.
  • finally, we place the flat edge of the stone on top of the bridge of the nose and slide it down to the hairline – at least twice.
